Orioles on deck: What to watch Tuesday vs. Red Sox

Orioles (73-78) vs. Red Sox (86-64)

Where: Camden Yards

First pitch: 7:05 p.m.

TV/Radio: MASN/105.7 The Fan

Starting pitchers: Orioles RHP Kevin Gausman (11-10, 4.83 ERA) vs. Red Sox LHP Drew Pomeranz (16-5, 3.28)

What to watch

1. Pump the brakes. The Orioles are falling fast, 5½ games out of a playoff spot with 11 games to go, and now need a big finish just to end above .500. The Orioles are four losses away from their first losing season of the Duquette-Showalter era, and it's getting harder to imagine a turnaround with five wins in their past 18 games.

2. Can't wait for Kevin. Kevin Gausman is likely down to two, maybe three more starts, and he could use another positive finish as the Orioles continue waiting for a full season of ace material from the former first-rounder. His second half has been strong. He has a 2.53 ERA over his past 11 starts and a 2.28 ERA over his past four. But that has only brought his season ERA to 4.83. Tonight brings his fourth start against the Red Sox this season, and he has a 3.86 ERA over his first three.

3. Not a fan. The Orioles have only managed to muster a .215 average and .610 OPS in three games this season against tonight's Red Sox starter, Drew Pomeranz. The lefty has a 2.70 ERA against the Orioles this season, which is about par for the course — he has a 2.74 ERA overall since May 25, a stretch spanning 21 starts.
