Where: Angel Stadium of Anaheim

Trumbo activated, Hart optioned

The Orioles activated slugger Mark Trumbo (right rib cage strain) from the 10-day disabled list before Wednesday's game.

To make room, the club optioned left-hander Donnie Hart to Triple-A Norfolk. Hart, 26, has a 3.12 ERA in 39 appearances this season. He had allowed runs in consecutive outings before pitching a scoreless inning Tuesday.

Trumbo is batting .238/.300/.405 with 17 homers and 50 RBIs this season. Over the four games before he went on the DL, he was 0-for-17.

What to watch

1. Second-half sizzle. Few pitchers, if any, have been better than Kevin Gausman since July 19. Gausman has put together a four-start stretch in which he's 3-0 with a 0.65 ERA, allowing two runs with 32 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings. He's the right guy to have on the mound as the Orioles look to leave Anaheim with a series win to start this West Coast swing.

2. Mancini, Davis dip, Trumbo returns. Trey Mancini is 3-for-20 over his past five games with four hitless performances in that stretch. Chris Davis is 2-for-21 over his past six games, also with four hitless efforts during that time. Perhaps the whole lineup will get a boost from the return of Mark Trumbo, who also went into his disabled list stint struggling. Will any combination of the three snap out of it against rookie Troy Scribner, making his second career start?

3. Where they stand. The Orioles managed to lose no ground in the wild-card race with Tuesday's loss, remaining 1½ games out. The hitch is there are now three teams tied for the second wild card — the Royals, Mariners and Rays. See if the Orioles can gain ground on one or all this afternoon.
