Orioles (40-46) vs. Twins (45-41)

Where: Target Field

First pitch: 2:10 p.m.

TV/Radio: MASN, WJZ/105.7 FM

Starting pitchers: Orioles LHP Wade Miley (3-7, 5.20 ERA) vs. Twins LHP Adalberto Mejia (4-3, 4.32 ERA)

What to watch

1. Schoop at shortstop. All-Star second baseman Jonathan Schoop is the Orioles' latest starting shortstop with starter J.J. Hardy on the DL. When the Orioles brought up second baseman Johnny Giavotella, signs pointed toward Schoop playing some at his original position. Schoop played there earlier on the road trip when Giavotella entered the game. Maybe it was Ruben Tejada striking out Friday night with two in scoring position or Giavotella's pinch-hit single, but Buck Showalter clearly wants to see what he has with Schoop at short and Giavotella at second.

2. Last chance. Wade Miley gets a chance to end his first half on a good note, something neither Dylan Bundy nor Kevin Gausman could do. Miley has put himself in danger of being removed from the rotation with an 11.69 ERA over his past six starts.

3. Machado watch. Since the beginning of the season, it has felt like the Orioles have been waiting for Manny Machado to look more like his old self on a consistent basis. Every time he has games like Friday night's, when he had four hits, two homers and four RBIs, the question is whether he can follow it up with another like it. And another. And another. That hasn't come to pass so far this season, but maybe he'll catch fire heading into the All-Star break.

4. Digging and digging. The Orioles sunk to 9½ games out of first place and five games out of a playoff spot with their latest defeat, and remain tied for last place in the American League East. This is shaping up to be one heck of a hole they'll have to dig their way out of after the All-Star break. Even with a couple of wins, their position won't likely look much better come Sunday.

Manny Machado's big day at plate goes for naught in Orioles' loss to Twins

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado had one of his best offensive performances of the season in Friday’s loss at Target Field.
