Orioles minor league report: Yusniel Díaz off to slow start with Bowie

Triple-A Norfolk

Outfielder DJ Stewart hit his team-high 10th home run in the Tides’ 7-2 loss to Toledo on Friday, giving him four hits and a pair of walks in his 10 at-bats entering Saturday, possibly reversing the skid he’s been on since returning from disabled list in early June from a hamstring injury. Stewart, 24, batted .242/.349/.401 with 19 doubles and eight steals in 12 tries through 83 games.

Double-A Bowie

Outfielder Yusniel Díaz, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade for All-Star shortstop Manny Machado, is off to a slow start in Bowie’s colors this month. Díaz, 21, singled in his first at-bat on July 20, but entered Saturday with one hit in 19 at-bats since, putting him at 2-for-20 overall. Díaz was batting .314 with a .905 OPS and 20 extra-base hits with Tulsa.

High-A Frederick

Michael Baumann, a 22-year-old right-hander selected in the third round of the 2017 draft out of Jacksonville, has been one of the more consistent pitchers in the system. With six scoreless innings Thursday against Winston-Salem, Baumann improved to 6-2 with a 3.34 ERA at Frederick. He was 5-0 with a 1.42 ERA in seven starts for Low-A Delmarva before his promotion.

Low-A Delmarva

Left-hander Cameron Bishop, a 26th-round pick last summer who was signed to an above-slot bonus, has plugged along with strong results all year for the Shorebirds. Even with four earned runs in five innings Thursday at Hagerstown, the 22-year-old has a 2.95 ERA in 18 starts despite a fastball that’s been topping out in the high-80s of late.

Rookie-level GCL Orioles

Right-hander Jayvien Sandridge, a 32nd-round pick this summer out of Mercersburg Academy by way of Hagerstown, struck out a career-high four in two innings for the GCL Orioles on Friday. Sandridge, 19, has struck out 13 against nine walks with four earned runs in in 11 2/3 innings over 10 outings.
