What to watch

1. Spiraling Birds. The Orioles have lost 14 of their past 17 games, during which time the they've been outscored 99-63. The Orioles have allowed three runs or fewer only six times during that stretch, posting a 5.45 ERA since April 13. The bats seem to be waking up some, averaging five runs and nine hits over the past six games. But the pitching downturn has left the bats and arms somewhat out of sync.

2. Tillman to the rescue? Chris Tillman starts for the first time since he pitched seven one-hit, scoreless innings Friday in a win over the Detroit Tigers. The Orioles should get an indication as to whether Tillman began to figure some things out in that game or if it was a one-start blip. That one start lowered his ERA by nearly three runs, and he has brought his ERA down from 11.91 to 7.03 over his past two starts.

3. Be patient. Angels pitcher Jaime Barria faces the Orioles for the first time, making his first start since April 22, when he lasted just two innings, allowing two runs on five hits. The reason that outing was so brief was San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt's battle with Barria — a 21-pitch at-bat in which Belt fouled off 16 pitches before lining out. While that kind of patience isn't really the Orioles' style, perhaps they need to use that to their advantage to try to get to the Angels bullpen early as they look to avoid a sweep.
