Baysox clinch Eastern League Western Division title with win

The Bowie Baysox clinched the Double-A Eastern League Western Division championship with a 6-3 win over the visiting Altoona Curve on Thursday night in their final home game of the regular season.

The Baysox, an Orioles affiliate, clinched their first playoff berth since 2012 with a win Monday night and their second division title in franchise history, and first since 2008, with Thursday's win. The first home playoff game will be Friday, Sept. 11. The first two games of the five-game series will be played on the road at the home field of the team that finishes second in the Western Division.

Bowie scored five runs in the third inning Thursday. Three of the Baysox's five hits in the game came during that inning, including a three-run home run from Quincy Latimore that sealed the victory. The home run was Latimore's team-leading 18th of the season.

Horse racing: A few days of indecision over, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is back on schedule for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic and a chance for a magical career-ending race. After a tough loss in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, American Pharoah's owner Ahmed Zayat said his "gut feeling" was to retire rather than race on as planned. On Thursday, after hours of talks with trainer Bob Baffert and the rest of Team Pharoah this week, the owner decided against retirement because "the champ deserves another chance.

Men's college basketball: Towson named Oliver Brown director of student-athlete development. He spent the past two years as a graduate manager at Mount St. Mary's, where he played as a walk-on.

NCAA honor: Former Bowie State softball player Cassandra Clayborne and former Johns Hopkins swimmer Ana Bogdanovski were named two of 30 women recognized by the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee for the Woman of the Year Award.

National Women's Soccer League: Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn, who had six goals and one assist in August, was voted Player of the Month.

Minor league basketball: The Bay Area Shuckers signed second-year players Cameron Cook (Hood, Calvert Hall), Devin Spencer (St. Mary's, Towson Catholic) and Maurice Stewart (St. Frances).
