Orioles' Tim Beckham homers, leaves game against Red Sox after tweaking groin

Orioles third baseman Tim Beckham hit a towering two-run home run out with the wind in the second inning of Thursday's 10-7 win over the Boston Red Sox but didn't return to the field.

Manager Buck Showalter said Beckham tweaked his groin making a play on Blake Swihart’s grounder to third and was taken out as a precautionary measure.

Showalter said Beckham likely won’t play in Friday’s home game against the Tampa Bay Rays, but the hope is he returns to the lineup for the team’s Grapefruit League season finale Sunday.

Beckham was replaced by Danny Valencia at third base for the top of the third inning, and walked back to the clubhouse unaccompanied by trainers after that half-inning.

The Orioles have been pleased with both halves of Beckham's positions swap this year, with his range and arm adjusting well to third base while Manny Machado takes over at shortstop.

Beckham is batting .273 this spring with four home runs.
