FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Orioles will play their final game in a stretch of five road games in their first seven to open their Grapefruit League schedule this afternoon against the Boston Red Sox at Jet Blue Park.
They are also trying to get their first win of the spring. They have lost five and played to a 10-inning tie in their Grapefruit League opener. This will be their first of three trips to Jet Blue Park in Fort Myers.
You’ve read it before. Since the Orioles have mostly played road games in the early going, the reserves are getting a lot of work away from Sarasota. At the same time, the “varsity” squad has lost their two games by a combined 21-10 score.
Right-hander Mike Wright will make his second spring start. He was solid in his first outing, allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings and striking out two while walking none in the Orioles’ spring opener against the Atlanta Braves in Lake Buena Vista.
Wright’s fastball was sitting at 94-95 and hitting 96 in his first outing. The radar gun at Champion Stadium is known to be notoriously liberal, so maybe we get a better feeling of his velocity here.
He will face a formidable Red Sox lineup full of starters.
Other than Wright, the other Orioles pitchers slated to pitch this afternoon are Brad Brach, Dylan Bundy, Oliver Drake, T.J. McFarland and Chaz Roe.
Right-hander Yovani Gallardo will make his first spring start on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater. It will be the first Orioles’ appearance for Gallardo, who signed a two-year, $22-million deal early in spring training.
LF Hyun Soo Kim is starting in left field and batting cleanup. He’s still looking for his first hit after 13 at bats.
Here are the starting lineups for both teams:
