Manager Buck Showalter said the club plans to make a decision on whether to place Steve Pearce on the disabled like before the Orioles open their three-game interleague series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday.
Showalter said he hoped to get some clarity by the end of Thursday. Pearce still needs to swing a bat to test his nagging right arm. He left Sunday’s game with a flexor mass strain following an errant throw from right field and received a cortisone shot after his exit, but hasn’t done much since.
Asked whether Pearce being able to hit without discomfort will be the deciding factor in whether he’s placed on the DL, Showalter said he’s hoping Pearce will be able to hit and throw by Friday’s series opener at AT&T Park.
“I think that part of it, to be frank, is going to be less of a challenge than the other part of it,” Showalter said. “I’m hoping that we can resolve both of them, but it’s one of those things where we don’t want to go test it and set it back. He’s champing at the bit, and he wanted to try it yesterday. We’re trying to be smart here. We don’t want it to turn into something else and lose the backdate days.”
