The Orioles made a roster move before Wednesday’s game to replenish their bullpen, recalling left-hander T.J. McFarland from Triple-A Norfolk and optioning right-hander Oliver Drake back to the Tides.
McFarland is expected to be available for tonight’s game.
The timing of the move is interesting. Brian Matusz, who was one of the Orioles’ two lefty relievers entering the day, had the appeal for his eight-game suspension heard Wednesday. A ruling isn’t expected to come today and could take until Friday. Matusz was ejected in the 12th inning of the Orioles’ May 23 game in Miami for allegedly having a "foreign substance' on his right forearm.
The Orioles will also face a lefty-heavy lineup this weekend in Cleveland.
Drake allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning in the Orioles’ 6-4 loss to the Astros on Tuesday. He has allowed three runs over his last two outings (a span of 2 2/3 innings) after opening with three scoreless outings (five innings).
McFarland owns a 3.60 ERA in five big league appearances this year. He has held left-handed hitters to a .214 batting average (3-for-14) this season.
Down at Norfolk, catcher Matt Wieters is batting leadoff and catching in his final minor league rehabilitation game. Right-hander Bud Norris is also starting that game and both will join the team following the game.
