The Orioles are looking for a right fielder and fan favorite Nick Markakis probably would be available if they wanted to give up a prospect and assume the rest of his contract.
So, if you’re a big Nick fan – and there were some Markakis jerseys in the stands at Champion Stadium on Tuesday – you probably want to know whether that’s a real possibility or a pipe dream.
It’s probably the latter, since Markakis still has about $33 million coming in guaranteed money on the four-year contract that the Orioles were not willing to give him last year.
Nothing has changed, except that he’s a year older.
Don’t misunderstand. There are a lot of people in the organization who would love to have him around because he’s a solid guy who was a great leader by example in the clubhouse and is a good on-base guy. But the Braves would have to absorb a big chunk of that contract and there’s no indication that they’re eager to get rid of him.
There also is no indication that Markakis is even on the list of outfielders that Dan Duquette and his staff are considering for the job that Dexter Fowler turned down last week. The fact that Fowler turned down $33 million and Markakis would cost $33 million is just a coincidence.
