With Chris Davis, you take the good with the bad. As much as the Orioles first baseman can change a game with one swing of his bat – and can carry a team when he goes on a home run binge – the other side of the coin includes some deep slumps.
Like right now.
Davis is mired in a 0-for-24 slump following the Orioles' 6-3 interleague loss to the Colorado Rockies.
"He's going through a period where he's not – stating the obvious – doing what he's capable of," Showalter said. "You got to stick with him and trust the track record. He's frustrated with it, believe me. He's here early. Sometimes you can try too hard. I know how bad he wants to be the contributor he's capable of being."
Davis was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk on Tuesday. In one of his whiffs – an eighth-inning swinging strikeout – Davis stranded two baserunners in scoring position.
Over his hitless streak, Davis has 11 strikeouts in 28 plate appearances, but also walked four times.
"You see the walks that Chris is still drawing," Showalter said. "There's still a whole lot of respect for the contact-to-damage ratio. He'll get it going. It's just been a period of time where he's not able to contribute the way he's capable of."
Showalter gave no indication that he would sit Davis or drop him in the batting order.
