Matt Wieters to DH in extended spring Tuesday, plus other other injury notes and lineups

Orioles manager Buck Showalter had lots of injury updates Monday during his pregame press conference, including news that catcher Matt Wieters (right elbow) will play designated hitter in an extended spring training game in Florida on Tuesday.

According to Showalter, Wieters took batting practice on Monday against coaches in Sarasota, Fla., and against minor league pitcher Dane De La Rosa. Wieters has been throwing some as he attempts to come back from ligament replacement (Tommy John) surgery.

Showalter said he was unaware how the throwing progressed Monday, but said the club is encouraged by Wieters DHing in an extended spring game.

Wieters "was a little sore in the right places today. I don't know what that exactly meant," Showalter said. "I haven't heard [about the throwing] part of it. I just know he is DHing tomorrow and I'll take that as a positive."

There is no timetable for Wieters return, but the hope is that he'll be back in early May.

In other injury news updates:

** David Lough (hamstring) was activated from the disabled list Monday after going 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly Sunday at High-A Frederick. Knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa was sent back to Triple-A Norfolk. He flew into Atlanta and will start tonight against the Atlanta Braves' top affiliate, Gwinnett.

** Jimmy Paredes (back) played in his first game in extended spring training Monday, going 1-for-4 while playing left field for five innings and right field for four. He'll play third base Tuesday. Showalter said Paredes likely will play again in Florida Wednesday and then could start a rehab assignment after that. Double-A Bowie is at home this weekend, so that's an obvious destination. Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy also could join the Baysox later this week.
