The MRI performed on Orioles third baseman Manny Machado's left knee this afternoon has been read by a radiologist, but the club won't announce the findings until team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens also reads the results. That will likely occur during batting practice, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
Showalter wouldn't comment on the early indications of the tests, but he said it is "so far better than it could have been."
"I feel very confident that Manny will be playing for us early next season," Showalter said.
Ryan Flaherty is starting in Machado's place tonight against the Blue Jays, the first time a player other than Machado has started at third since he was called up on Aug. 9, 2012.
Showalter said there will be several options at third, including Flaherty, Danny Valencia, Jonathan Schoop, Alexi Casilla and even backup catcher Steve Clevenger through the end of the season.
However, Casilla is out indefinitely after hitting his head on Nick Markakis' leg while making a lunging attempt for a fly ball in Monday's game.
Casilla, who received a CT scan in Tampa after the game that allowed him to return to Baltimore with the team on Monday night, said he didn't remember anything about the play.
Showalter said he regretted not taking out Casilla immediately after the play. He said Casilla seemed to be OK and talked his way into staying in the game. But when the Orioles came into the dugout the next half inning, Showalter said there was a look in Casilla's eye that told Showalter to take him out of the game.
Casilla also can't play because of a sprained right thumb that occurred on the same play. Casilla had the thumb wrapped before Tuesday's game.
Here are tonight's lineups:
Orioles Brian Roberts 2B Nate McLouth LF Adam Jones CF Chris Davis 1B Matt Wieters C Nick Markakis RF J.J. Hardy SS Dan Johnson DH Ryan Flaherty 3B Chris Tillman RHP
