Maryland may have to navigate through the final part of its season without its top playmaker.
Junior wide receiver Stefon Diggs suffered a lacerated kidney against Penn State on Nov. 1 and appears likely to be out of game action through at least the end of the regular season, according to multiple sources.
The Terps (6-3) have three regular season games remaining, beginning Saturday night against Michigan State.
Diggs was injured early in the fourth quarter of the Terp's victory at Penn State, when he took a shot to the kidney area while diving and stretching out for the end zone after a catch.
Diggs was down on the field for an extended period and was tended to by Maryland’s athletic trainer before walking to the sideline.
While Diggs later returned to the game and nearly scored on the Terps’ next series, the wide receiver was in noticeable pain while walking to the postgame media area after the game.
Diggs would have been unavailable for Saturday’s game against Michigan State anyway after being suspended one game by the Big Ten for his role in a pre-game skirmish at Penn State.
However, the Terps will now be even more dependent on other wide receivers, such as senior Deon Long, beyond the one game. The Terps conclude their regular season at Michigan on Nov. 22 and with a home game against Rutgers on Nov. 29.
Diggs ranks second in the Big Ten in catches per game (5.8), fifth in receiving yards per game (72.7), and he leads Maryland with five touchdown catches.
Diggs is also averaging 23.9 yards per kick return, which is the fifth-highest mark in the conference.
Sophomore Jacquille Veii, a converted running back, was listed as the top backup to Diggs in the slot on the Terps’ most recent depth chart.
Veii has six catches for 108 yards and a touchdown this season.
