Buck Showalter gives updates on J.J. Hardy rehab, other injured Orioles

Orioles manager Buck Showalter decided not to sleep at the ballpark last night.

With the unrest downtown and the fact Showalter didn't have his car Saturday night – he was picked up at the airport and dropped off at Camden Yards during the game last night after returning from a memorial service for his father-in-law in Tennessee — he considered staying overnight as an option.

But his kids were flying out Saturday morning, so athletic trainer Richie Bancells drove him home last night. Showalter said he had no problems getting to northern Baltimore County or returning this morning.

It's Little League Day at the park and there are thousands of kids here today. There appears to be no security issues today after Saturday night's Freddie Gray protests caused Camden Yards to be locked down for roughly an inning.

Here are some injury notes, courtesy of Showalter.

** Shortstop J.J. Hardy (shoulder) was considering having a cortisone injection earlier this week but felt he was almost rid of the little bit of discomfort that remained. It didn't fully go away, so Hardy had the injection Saturday and will not resume baseball activities until Wednesday. Once there is no discomfort, Showalter said Hardy likely will have to undergo a minor league rehab stint of "three to four games," mainly so he can gets some at-bats.

Showalter was asked how many at-bats his veteran shortstop would need and the manager joked, "One. Do one right here, right down the hall."

** LHP Wesley Wright (left trapezius strain) will begin throwing in Sarasota, Fla., sometime next week.

** RHP Hunter Harvey (leg) is expected to throw a 25-pitch side session Wednesday in Sarasota.

** C Matt Wieters (shoulder) is still set to catch three to four innings Monday.

** Also, Steve Pearce is in the starting lineup after missing most of the week while mired in a slump that has him hitting .167 so far this season. Showalter gave Pearce some time to work things out at the plate, and thinks Pearce will be fine. "I don't ever worry about something carrying over with him. Whatever happened with him the last at-bat doesn't mean it's going to happen again. He's not one of those guys that let's stuff snowball. So [I] understand that the statistical return is a little unusual for him, but he'll get it going."

** The White Sox have altered their pitching matchup for this week against the Orioles. It will now be RHP Hector Noesi versus Ubaldo Jimenez on Monday, RHP Jeff Samardzija versus Chris Tillman on Tuesday and LHP Chris Sale against Miguel Gonzalez on Wednesday.

Here are the lineups:

Red Sox: Betts 8, Pedroia 4, Sandoval 5, Ramirez DH, Napoli 3, Holt 7, Craig 9, Bogaerts 6, Leon 2. Miley 1.

Orioles: Cabrera 6, Machado 5, Jones 8, Young 9, Davis 3, Pearce 7, Paredes DH, Lavarnway 2, Navarro 4. Norris 1.
