Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that the San Diego Padres will trade outfielder Melvin Upton to the Toronto Blue Jays for a minor-league prospect.
The Orioles had been in discussion with the Padres to acquire Upton for former starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, according to various reports.
The interest in Upton by the Orioles might have diminished with the pending return of outfielder Hyun Soo Kim, who could be activated today. He made a rehab appearance in Double-A Bowie Monday night.
A Jimenez-Upton deal would have made some sense for both sides since they'd be able to get rid of disappointing players nearing the end of big contracts. With Mark Trumbo being a free agent after the season, Upton would have offered the Orioles some protection if Trumbo signs elsewhere.
Aug. 1 is the non-waiver trade deadline.
