Ravens place Lorenzo Taliaferro and two others on IR, sign Casey Walker

The Ravens have placed rookie running back Lorenzo Taliaferro on injured reserve and have signed defensive tackle Casey Walker to the active roster off of the New England Patriots' practice squad.

Taliaferro suffered a sprained foot against the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 7. He was in a walking boot last week and wasn't expected to recover anytime soon, prompting the Ravens to promote rookie running back Fitz Toussaint from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday. Toussaint played strictly on special teams Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Drafted in the fourth round out of Coastal Carolina, Taliaferro rushed for 292 yards and four touchdowns and caught eight passes for 114 yards in his first pro season.

Losing Taliaferro hurts the backfield because of his power and speed working behind starter Justin Forsett, who has been dealing with a minor knee injury in recent weeks. The Ravens also have backup Bernard Pierce on the active roster.

Walker had 11 tackles and one sack in five games (one start) for the Patriots this season. The 6-foot-1, 335-pound former Oklahoma player has also played for the Carolina Panthers. He was cut by the Patriots and signed to their practice squad when they signed running back LeGarrette Blount.

Also Tuesday, the Ravens officially placed cornerback Asa Jackson (posterior cruciate ligament, right knee) and rookie free safety Terrence Brooks (posterior cruciate, medial collateral ligaments) on injured reserve, ending their seasons.

The Ravens also promoted center-guard Ryan Jensen to the active roster from the practice squad. And they are signing former Wake Forest defensive lineman Zach Thompson to their practice squad. Thompson has also played for the Denver Broncos and New York Jets.

The Ravens signed former St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Quinton Pointer to the practice squad. He has played in eight career games for the Rams and has six tackles. Pointer played collegiately at UNLV, going undrafted.

The Ravens tried out Pointer along with three other cornerbacks, Anthony Gaitor, Brandon Smith and LeQuan Lewis, according to sources.

The Ravens are at 52 players, one below the NFL roster limit.
