Ravens confident in rookie running back Buck Allen's pass-catching skills

One of the top reasons the Ravens selected rookie running back Buck Allen in the fourth round of the NFL draft was his ability to catch passes out of the backfield.

The former USC standout displayed that skill during the Ravens' recent rookie minicamp, adeptly transitioning in and out of breaks to make a series of receptions.

"We've seen Buck catch passes, we've seen Buck pass protect, so we know he can do it," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "He has done it out here and looks very smooth doing it. He's running the ball well. We haven't had any surprises."

Signed to a four-year, $2.75 million contract that includes a $474,472 signing bonus, Allen caught 63 passes for 710 yards and two touchdowns over the past two seasons. That included a career-high 41 catches for 458 yards and a touchdown last season.

Playing for Ravens offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, Allen is likely to get plenty of opportunities to catch the football.

With Trestman as head coach of the Chicago Bears, star running back Matt Forte caught 102 passes for 808 yards and four touchdowns last season and 74 passes for 594 yards and three touchdowns in 2013.

"Great receiver out of the backfield and good vision," Allen said of Forte. "Out of their No. 1 guy, they see a lot in me. So, I'm just here to prove my point."

Allen rushed for 1,489 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Although he was productive at USC and tested well (the 6-foot, 221-pound back ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seasons and had a 35 1/2 inch vertical leap), he was the 12th running back drafted.

"I just want to show the coaching staff why they drafted me, why I was their No. 1 guy on the board, and come in and prove my point, make the 53-man roster and go from there," Allen said. "It's an honor. It's a blessing knowing that all the hard work I put in throughout the years up to here is paying off. I didn't even know they were looking at me, and it was a blessing to have the opportunity to get that phone call."
