Outfielder Chris Dickerson cleared waivers Sunday and can now be outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles, according to an industry source.
Dickerson, who was placed on outright waivers Friday, can choose to not accept the minor league assignment and can elect free agency, which would allow him to sign with any club.
The Orioles, however, are now attempting to keep Dickerson in the organization, according to a source. Because he can play all three outfield positions, he adds valuable defensive versatility in the minors and would be a call away from getting back to the majors.
The Orioles had previously been trying to deal Dickerson, who was designated for assignment July 19.
Dickerson recorded a .245/.274/.412 line with four homers and 13 RBIs in 46 games primarily as a left-handed designated hitter. But once the club purchased the contract of Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia for that role, Dickerson became expendable.
