Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will hit 'wherever,' even leadoff

Third baseman Manny Machado was in the leadoff spot for Thursday night's exhibition game against the Toronto Blue Jays, but it probably would be unwise to read too much into where he shows up in the batting order at this point in spring training. Showalter has said he wants to get Machado as many at-bats as possible, and putting him at the top of the order on occasion will help accomplish that.

Machado said he never has put much stock in lineup slots.

"I don't really care,'' he said. "I'll go out there and play whereever. I see it as, you've got to hit regardless. I was always taught, don't ever get mad at where you're hitting in the lineup. Just go out there and do what you've got to do. Know that whereever it is, you're still going to have to put a bat in your hands and go out there and swing."

Right-hander Steve Johnson (St. Paul's) said his bruised finger is fine now and that he's ready to pitch in a game. "I just wanted one more bullpen session to get a better feel on the mound, but I'm fine,'' he said. … The Orioles will send at least three starters down to minor league camp next week to pitch in minor league camp exhibition games against international teams from Puerto Rico on March 14 and Canada on March 16.
