Orioles rehab updates on 3B Manny Machado and LHP Troy Patton

The Baltimore Sun

BOSTON -- Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that third baseman Manny Machado reported normal soreness Sunday following his first extending spring training game and will play seven innings at third base Monday and then a full game at designated hitter Tuesday.

When Machado began playing extended spring training games, it was believed that he would need three to five games before the team would consider sending him out on a rehabilitation assignment.

And while vice president of baseball operations Brady Anderson is scheduled to supervise Machado once he reports to a minor league affiliate, that might not be until Friday at the earliest, Showalter indicated, because Anderson is considering joining the Orioles for their upcoming series in Toronto.

Meanwhile, left-hander Troy Patton, who is serving a 25-game suspension for testing positive for a banned amphetamine, will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.

Patton will throw a short side session Monday and then fly to Lehigh Valley, Pa., to join the Norfolk team. Showalter said Patton is scheduled to pitch Tuesday and then again Thursday following a day off. After that, the Orioles will re-evaluate his schedule.

Patton, who is out of minor league options, is eligible to come off the restricted list April 30, provided no games are postponed between now and then.
