Orioles pregame: Tolleson optioned to Triple-A to make room for Lindstrom

The Orioles will try to salvage one game from the Angels tonight in the end of this brief two-game series against the Halos.

Jason Hammel (8-2, 2.61), who hasn't allowed an earned run in his past 19 innings, takes the mound for the Orioles. He will face Angels right-hander Jered Weaver (7-1, 2.40), who threw a no-hitter May 2.

Before the game, the Orioles optioned utility man Steve Tolleson to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list (right middle finger).

That means the Orioles will have a 13th pitcher on the roster and will have one fewer bench player, something Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the team will have through the homestand, which ends Sunday.

Tolleson, who will report to Norfolk on Saturday, said he was told the club wanted him to get consistent at-bats at Norfolk. With Miguel Tejada gone after being granted his release earlier this week, Tolleson can play everyday at third.

Left-handed reliever Dana Eveland, who went home to California for the birth of his second son, returned today and will be available.

Despite Tommy Hunter pitching in relief last night, he's still a leading candidate to make Saturday's spot start against Cleveland. Eveland is another possibility.

As the All-Star Game  approaches, Showalter said he received a call from Texas manager Ron Washington, who will lead the AL All-Star team, asking about the Orioles' pitching rotation schedule going into the break. Showalter said  Wei-Yin Chen is scheduled to start the final game before the break, which could put Jason Hammel in line to be available to pitch.

Hammel has made a strong case for the  All-Star Game, and tonight is his last start before the rosters are selected Sunday.
