Orioles pregame: Surgery imminent for outfielder Nolan Reimold

It's a humid, sticky Friday here at Camden Yards, and the Orioles are hosting the first of a three-game Beltway series against the Nationals.

In today's pregame, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said a decision has been made on the next step with outfielder Nolan Reimold, who hasn't played since April 30. Showalter wouldn't say what that decision is, but it appears from the way Showalter was talking that Reimold will have surgery.

Showalter, however, wouldn't concede that Reimold's season is over. Reimold has received multiple opinions on the bulging disk in his neck, but the Orioles still can't seem to solve what's wrong with Reimold, because he continues to have spots of tingling in his left arm and hasn't recovered the strength in it.

"I think he feels some comfort in knowing what we're going to do," Showalter said.

In other news:

-- Outfielder Nick Markakis hopes to swing a bat on Monday or Tuesday. Showalter said doctors wanted to see if the soreness in the wrist subsided over the weekend. Markakis said he hopes to returm before the All-Star break.

-- Showalter wouldn't say what the immediate plans were for 49-year-old left-hander Jamie Moyer, who can opt out after making his third start for Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. It doesn't seem like the team is recalling him as of now and it appears the Orioles would like for Moyer to make at least one more start for the Tides, but Moyer would have to agree to that first.

-- Outfielder Endy Chavez' hamstring injury hasn't progressed, so he left for Sarasota, where he will continue to receive treatment and rehab, on Thursday.

-- Right-handed reliever Stu Pomeranz, who suffered a left oblique tear, is pain free and is scheduled to start light tossing tomorrow. If all goes well, he could start a rehab assignment by mid-July.

-- Catcher Ronny Paulino has a phalangeal fracture in his left big toe that he sustained fouling a ball off his foot Sunday in Atlanta, Showalter said. He's able to play through it.

-- Reliever Matt Lindstrom will throw two innings tonight at Double-A Bowie and then pitch again Sunday there. He could be activated after Monday's off day.

-- Catcher Taylor Teagarden (back) is slated to start a rehab assignment with the GCL Orioles on July 2.
