Orioles starting Snyder at catcher; Evaluating Schoop, Urrutia and Clevenger

The Orioles can win a series for the first time in two weeks this afternoon with a win over the White Sox.

The Oriols win' last night, combined with the Rays' loss out west, puts them just two games out of the second AL wild-card spot as play begins today.

Catcher Matt Wieters is getting the afternoon off, and Chris Snyder is making his first start since he joined the club on Sept. 1.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said if he would have considered starting reserve catcher Steve Clevenger (Mount St. Joseph) had the White Sox been starting a right-handed pitcher.

For players like Jonathan Schoop, Henry Urrutia and Clevenger, Showalter has made it clear that them experiencing a big league clubhouse – especially playing meaningful games in September – is important for their development.

And with second base, left field and backup catcher being the three spots most uncertain spots going into the offseason, all three of those players will have roles in deciding those spots next year.

But Showalter said that while the trio could be used in different situations down the stretch, they won't likely see much time as long as the Orioles stay in the playoff race. The club wants to see them, but spring training will be a more feasible evaluation time for those players.

"[Is there] temptation?" Showalter said. "Not yet. I can fight that temptation as long as we're still fighting for a playoff spot. Not that they couldn't be a contributor or wouldn't be asked to, but no, where we are, not that they couldn't. … That's to be continued. It could be this year, and will one game answer all those questions?"

"They'll get their time," Showalter said. "I hope not this year. So expect that to be a tryout camp or Instructional League? I don't expect that."

Danny Valencia, who drove in two runs in the Orioles' 4-0 win over the White Sox, will bat sixth this afternoon.
