Orioles pregame: Orioles vs. Phillies

SARASOTA, FLA. — Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz will make his fourth spring start today against the Phillies at Ed Smith Stadium, going against Phillies ace Roy Halladay.

It's also a big day here at Ed Smith because Nick Markakis, who has spent the entire spring recovering from offseason abdominal surgery, will make his first start in right field today. He's made three starts at DH, going 2-for-8.

Kevin Gregg, Jim Johnson, Willie Eyre, Zach Phillips and Pedro Strop are also slated to pitch today for the Orioles.

Some notes out of today's pregame:

-- LHP Zach Britton, who has a shoulder inflammation flare up, will see specialist Dr. James Andrews tomorrow morning in Pensacola. Britton called this a "worst-case" scenario in avoiding beginning the season on the DL. Unless Britton gets some positive news from Andrews, he said he believes he won't make the Opening Day lineup and will target a mid- to late-April return date.

--LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (elbow discomfort) threw a bullpen today and is now slated to pitch next Thursday on three days rest in a minor-league game at Twin Lakes Park. He will go three innings or 45 pitches, whichever comes first.

-- RHP Darren O'Day (groin) and Jason Berken (hamstring) both had successful pen sessions and could join Wada for a game at the minor-league complex on Thursday.

-- Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he will likely meet with coaches and executive vice president for baseball operations Dan Duquette following today's game to discuss another round of cuts. The roster, currently at 46, will likely pare down to 40 players.

-- The Orioles open the regular season with six straight games before their first off day, which will force the team to start the season with a five-man rotation. Showalter also said he hasn't ruled out the idea of carrying 13 pitchers, but hasn't contemplated it much.
