Pre-game notes: Orioles aim to end first half with a split in Anaheim

The Orioles close out the first half of the season with this afternoon's series finale against the Angels at Angel Stadium.

A win would give Baltimore a series split and a winning record on the club's seven-game West Coast road trip.

Matt Wieters will get a day off from catching this afternoon, a move that had less to do with Wieters catching in the All-Star Game on Tuesday and more to do with getting their franchise backstop more rest. Wieters is DHing today and batting third.

"It has to do with him catching a whole lot," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He's a very precious commodity for us and we're going to continue to monitor that. I've seen some managers, they have  a guy who was in an all-star game and they let him pick a day [to have off] when he comes back. I'm not sure if I want to float that out there for anybody. But for our guys who are going, they probably wouldn't want it."

Mark Reynolds is back in the lineup playing first base and hitting fifth after taking a day off Saturday with a sore left hand after taking a pitch there Friday.

Xavier Avery also gets a day off, which puts Robert Andino atop the batting order.

Orioles starter  Wei-Yin Chen  is going for his first win in four starts. He allowed just two runs on two hits over 7 1/3 innings in Seattle on Tuesday and left the game with a 4-1 lead in the eighth, but the Orioles blew that lead before winning 5-4 in 10 innings.
