Orioles pregame notes: O's option Mychal Givens to Bowie, activate Miguel Gonzalez

BOSTON — As expected, the Orioles optioned right-handed reliever Mychal Givens to the minor leagues to make 25-man roster space to activate right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, who will start Thursday's series finale at Fenway Park.

What was uncertain was where the Orioles would send Givens, who pitched a clean eighth inning in his major league debut Wednesday, and the team chose to send him back to Double-A Bowie.

There was discussion – and proponents in the organization – to send Givens to Triple-A Norfolk, where he could continue to develop while facing more seasoned hitters. But ultimately, the team decided to send him back to Double-A, where he has flourished under the guidance of Bowie pitching coach Alan Mills.

-- Adam Jones is out of the starting lineup again, missing his seventh game in the Orioles' past nine. The team hoped that Jones might be able to return to the lineup for Friday's home game against the Cleveland Indians, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that might not necessarily be the case. Showalter still considers Jones day-to-day.

-- This afternoon, the Orioles face lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, their former prospect who was dealt to the Boston Red Sox in the Andrew Miller trade last season, for the second time. Rodriguez tossed six scoreless innings in his first meeting with his former team on June 9 at Camden Yards, holding the Orioles to three hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Rodriguez has allowed one run or fewer and gone six or more innings in four of his five major league starts. The Blue Jays pummeled him for nine runs over 4 2/3 innings on June 14.

-- Norfolk right-hander Zach Davies has been named to the U.S. team in next month's All-Star Futures Game on July 12 in Cincinnati. Davies, who is the Orioles' No. 6 prospect according to Baseball America, is 3-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) with the Tides and has allowed three runs or fewer in 12 of his 14 games.
