Manny Machado is in the starting lineup Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays, and Orioles manager Buck Showalter said in his pregame news conference that he doesn't know when the verdict of the third baseman's appeal hearing will be released.
The Orioles hope for a reduction on Machado's five-game suspension for throwing his bat against the Oakland Athletics on June 8. Executive vice president Dan Duquette and Machado attended the appeal Wednesday at the Warehouse.
Showalter said that if he had to take an educated guess, he would predict a decision from the league Monday or Tuesday, mentioning that perhaps a delay stemmed from it being the weekend.
Here are other highlights from Showalter's pregame news conference:
-- Right-hander Kevin Gausman will have a work day Monday. Showalter said there's no guarantee that he will return to the Orioles on Tuesday at the conclusion of the required 10-day period in the minors after he was optioned.
-- Right-hander Chris Tillman will start Wednesday against the Texas Rangers. Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen will likely start Thursday, but Showalter said that could change. The Orioles still haven't named a starter for Tuesday to replace right-hander Bud Norris, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain.
-- Second baseman Alexi Casilla, who has been playing at Triple-A Norfolk, will undergo surgery to repair the hamate bone in his right hand Tuesday in Sarasota, Fla.
-- Triple-A Norfolk right-hander Josh Stinson was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday with a lat strain. Left-hander Jake Pettit started in his place.
Here are today's lineups:
Orioles: Markakis RF, Pearce LF, Jones CF, Cruz DH, Davis 1B, Hardy SS, Machado 3B, Schoop 2B, Hundley C, Gonzalez P
