After sending right-hander Kevin Gausman to Triple-A Norfolk following his start Tuesday night, the Orioles have recalled first baseman Christian Walker from Norfolk and he will start Wednesday's afternoon game (1:10 p.m.) in Minnesota, batting fifth as the Orioles' designated hitter.

Walker has hit left-handed pitchers well in Triple- A, recording a .310/.351/.494 slash line against them, so he's a good fit to start against Twins left-hander Tommy Milone.

Over his last 15 games overall, Walker is hitting .333/.373/.540 with four doubles, three homers and seven RBIs.

Walker will likely be optioned Thursday when the team is forced to activate outfielder Nolan Reimold from the paternity list. Even though Walker's stay with the Orioles will be short, manager Buck Showalter said he wanted to reward Walker for a job well done.

Sending Gausman to Triple-A will allow him to remain on a regular schedule during next week's All-Star break. He has not lost his spot in the rotation as the Orioles plan to recall him after he makes two starts for Norfolk.

Gausman will start for the Tides on Sunday and will likely pitch again five days later before rejoining the major league club. He is eligible to return July 18.

Left-hander Wesley Wright, who is on the disabled list for a left trapezius strain, is still on a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk.

Wright hasn't pitched very well with the Tides, posting a 6.23 ERA in eight relief outings, but he did extend his rehab assignment through this week. So the team must make a decision regarding Wright after Sunday's game.
