CLEVELAND -- The reports on right-hander Jason Hammel's second minor league rehab start – in which he threw four innings on 57 pitches for short-season Class-A Aberdeen – were positive and the Orioles' Opening Day starter will rejoin the club in Baltimore on Thursday.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter, who said Hammel should be able to pitch Friday or Saturday at the earliest, said he believes Hammel can be used as either a starter or reliever.

"I think he still can because of the number of guys we have in bullpen," Showalter said. "We'd keep starting him down there if it was the regular season, but you don't want to carry seven pitchers and have a guy only capable of pitching four or five innings. I think with the numbers of pitchers we have, we could use him in any capacity we wanted to."

Brian Roberts will be the Orioles' designated hitter tonight for the second time in the past three games, allowing left-handed hitting Ryan Flaherty to get a start at second base before the Orioles face left-handed starters Thursday (Jose Quintana), Friday (John Danks) and Saturday (Hector Santiago) against the White Sox.
