Adam Jones will be back in center field in Game 1 of today's split doubleheader for the first time since June 15. Jones, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury, is also back in the starting lineup for the first time since June 20 when he served as the designated hitter.
The center fielder said he threw without pain for the past three days, and after the added day off from yesterday's rainout, Buck Showalter said he is ready to give him a chance to play the field. A decision on whether to play him again in center, DH him or rest him during Game 2 will be made after the team sees how he does in Game 1.
-- Kevin Gausman, whose start at Triple-A Norfolk was rained out, was an option to be called up to pitch one of the games of today's doubleheader, but Showalter said he will throw either two or three innings at Norfolk today instead.
The Orioles will need a starter for Thursday's game against Texas, so Gausman pitching only a couple of innings today makes him an option to start that contest.
-- Jonathan Schoop has been out with a knee injury since April 17, but he continues to make progress on his rehab stint with Double-A Bowie.
Showalter said a decision will be made Monday to activate him from the DL and be available to play that night against the Rangers. He could also head to Norfolk to continue his rehab stint.
He has played seven games at Bowie, but would go to Norfolk because the Baysox are going on the road. The last day of his 20-day minor league rehab window is July 8.
-- T.J. McFarland has been called up as the 26th man for today's doubleheader. The reliever won't be eligible to pitch in Game 1, per the 26th-man rule that allows teams to call up an extra player for a doubleheader, but he will be another arm for the nightcap. Today won't go against his mandatory 10-day stint in the minors and he will be sent back to Norfolk following today's game.
-- Chris Davis is making his second straight start in right field. He also started there on Friday, but before then hadn't played the position since 2012. Chris Parmelee is starting at first base.
