The Orioles have placed Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis and have called up right-hander Mike Wright to take his place in the bullpen.
Garcia has posted a 5.93 ERA in eight games. In 13 2/3 relief innings, he has allowed 10 runs – nine earned -- on 11 hits. Garcia has allowed allowed three homers and has issued more walks (11) than strikeouts (eight).
Garcia's fastball velocity has dipped considerably since spring training, when he was regularly hitting the high 90s. Currently, his average fastball velocity is 93.1 mph, according to FanGraphs.
Garcia has no history of shoulder issues. He did have elbow reconstruction surgery, commonly known at Tommy John surgery, in 2013.
A Rule 5 pick must be on the active roster for at least 90 days to fulfill Rule 5 requirements. Service time logged when rosters are expanded in September counts.
In his last outing, Garcia walked four over 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
Wright, the Orioles' minor league Pitcher of the Year two years ago, is 3-0 with a 2.64 ERA in six starts with the Tides. He has yet to pitch in the majors and will work out of the Orioles bullpen.
