Orioles pitching prospect Hunter Harvey will be examined by team doctors on Wednesday after experiencing elbow tightness in his most recent start in extended spring training, according to an industry source.
Harvey, who was working his way back from a hairline fracture in his right shin that he suffered during spring training, left his start Sunday after just two innings of work.
He was pitching in extended spring training, building his inning count to five innings and was getting close to joining a minor league affiliate.
Instead, he flew to Baltimore on Tuesday night and will see team orthopedist Dr. Michael Jacobs on Wednesday. An MRI is also slated to be performed to see if there is any structural damage.
Harvey, 20, was shut down for the final month of the 2014 minor league season with elbow tightness following his final start of the season July 25. He was diagnosed with a flexor mass strain and was shut down.
He didn't participate in instructional league, but was given a clean MRI in October and cleared to resume his regular offseason throwing program.
Harvey pitched in just 87 2/3 innings last season for low Single-A Delmarva. The 6-foot-4 right-hander was 7-5 with a 3.18 ERA in 17 starts with the Shorebirds.
Harvey raised eyebrows during his first big league spring training, posting a 0.00 ERA in three Grapefruit League innings, allowing one unearned run, one hit, four strikeouts and two walks.
Harvey, the team's first-round pick in 2013, is ranked as the Orioles' second-best prospect behind only Dylan Bundy.
The son of former big league closer Bryan Harvey, Hunter Harvey was signed to a $1.95 million bonus after being selected with the 22nd overall pick in 2013.
