Orioles outright right-hander Evan Meek to Triple-A Norfolk

After a strong spring training, Evan Meek made the Orioles' Opening Day roster. And then he struggled.

The Orioles announced Wednesday that they have outrighted right-handed relief pitcher Evan Meek to Triple-A Norfolk. Meek can reject the assignment and become a free agent.

With the move, the Orioles now have 38 players on their 40-man roster. When free agency begins Thursday at 9 a.m. ET, that number will drop to 32.

Meek, 31, split the 2014 season between the major leagues and Triple-A. In 23 games with the Orioles, he was 0-4 with a 5.79 ERA. He had a 2-0 record with a 1.94 ERA and 16 saves for Norfolk.

Signed to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training in February, Meek made the Opening Day roster after only giving up one run in nine innings in the Grapefruit League.
