Starting pitchers: Orioles LHP Wade Miley (1-1, 2.27 ERA) vs. Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg (3-1, 2.66 ERA)

Nuno up, Verrett down

One day after Logan Verrett pitched all three extra innings to earn the win against the Nationals, the Orioles needed a fresh arm for the bullpen.

So, they optioned Verrett to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday and called up left-hander Vidal Nuno.

Verrett, 26, is 2-0 with five scoreless innings for the Orioles this season. Nuno, 29, has a 6.55 ERA in eight relief appearances with the Orioles. He last pitched Saturday for the Tides.

What to watch

1. Miley high. Wade Miley has been one of the Orioles' two best starters this year, and like Kevin Gausman on Monday, is coming off an outing that was severely shortened for factors beyond his control. Miley might've been the first pitcher in baseball history to be hit by comebackers in back-to-back at-bats. That forced him out after just two outs in the first inning Friday. One of those line drives hit his left arm, but here he is five days later, set to pitch. It will be worth watching whether he's physically OK, and whether he can keep this up -- he has yet to allow more than three runs in a game and has struck out 38 in 31 2/3 innings.

2. Strasmas. Like Max Scherzer a night earlier, Stephen Strasburg comes into tonight as one of the top starting pitchers in the National League. He's among NL leaders with a 2.66 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and a .220 opponents' batting average. He has been as consistent as can be, pitching exactly seven innings and allowing two or three runs in each of his first five starts. He pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings his last time out for his shortest start of the year.

3. Kings of the Parkway. The Orioles have a chance to make it six straight years with season series victories over the Nationals by winning tonight. The Orioles have only once lost a season series to their nearest neighbors to the south -- in 2007, when the Nats took four of six games. The Orioles have already secured at least a season series split for the 10th straight year. The Orioles are 19-7 against the Nats over the past six years.
