Orioles recall Jason Garcia
The Orioles have recalled right-hander Jason Garcia from Double-A Bowie.
Garcia, 23, is 4-7 with a 4.79 ERA in 15 starts with Double-A Bowie this season. A 2015 Rule 5 draft pick, he went 1-0 with a 4.25 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 21 games with the Orioles last season.
What to watch
1. Slim margin. On June 29, the Orioles took a 5 1/2 game lead in the American League East after their seventh straight win. But the Orioles have lost six of eight games since, and that lead is down to one over the Toronto Blue Jays and two over the Boston Red Sox. Can the Orioles get back in the win column to begin rebuilding a first-place cushion?
2. Starts on the mound. After going 2-0 with three straight passable starts upon returning from the disabled list on June 18, Yovani Gallardo slipped up his last outing with four earned runs in four innings. With the bullpen taxed and roster moves needed daily, the Orioles desperately need a good start this afternoon. Will Gallardo provide it?
3. Trumbo Bumbo returns. Only two days away from appearing in the Home Run Derby, Mark Trumbo is again making some noise with the tool that landed him there. Trumbo has hit four homers in his past five games and seven in 15 games since a 13-game drought. The Orioles slugger is back on top of the major league power mountain with 27 on the season. Can he add to that total today?
