The Orioles' first roster cuts of the spring were made Sunday afternoon, and there weren't a lot of big surprises.
Infielders Ryan Adams and Josh Bell were optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, while rookie right-hander Dylan Bundy is headed to Single-A Delmarva. Xavier Avery, L.J. Hoes, Michael Ohlman, Manny Machado, Brian Ward and Steve Johnson had been informed that they were returning to minor league camp.
Technically, Machado is not a cut. He's a minor league invitee, so he is just being sent back to minor league camp. He'll likely be brought back to play in a few more spring games.
Buxton works out for O's
The Orioles worked out projected top-five high school prospect Byron Buxton early Sunday at Ed Smith Stadium. Buxton, a two-sport star at Appling County High School in Baxley, Ga., could still be available when the Orioles pick fourth in the June draft, but there's a lot of buzz that the Mariners will take him with the third pick.
Around the horn
Pitcher Darren O'Day was scratched from a scheduled relief appearance Sunday with some groin soreness. He will be re-evaluated on Monday. … Taiwanese pitcher Wei-Yin Chen has been added to the travel roster for Monday's game in Dunedin, Fla. … Louis Angelos, the son of the owner, attended Sunday's game.
