Orioles left-hander Wade Miley has no lingering effects from line drive to calf Thursday

CHICAGO — Orioles left-hander Wade Miley said Friday that he wasn't having any issues with the area on his left calf where he was hit by a line drive on the final pitch of his team debut Thursday.

"I'm fine," Miley said. "No problems. Good to go."

He added that there wasn't any additional swelling, and Miley took part in the pitcher's stretch and pregame routine with his teammates at U.S. Cellular Field.

"No news is good news," manager Buck Showalter said. "[Head athletic trainer] Richie [Bancells] felt good about last night. First, we thought it hit him in the Achilles, but it was kind of lower calf. It didn't swell much last night. I haven't heard anything from Richie today about it, which is pretty good news. … I'm not expecting anything. He should be OK."

Miley allowed four earned runs on eight hits, with the last two runs coming in his fifth and final inning of the Orioles' 5-3 loss to the Texas Rangers. He struck out five and didn't issue a walk, but his misses were in the strike zone and went for Rangers hits. He counts the low liner that hit him as another one that could have hurt him more on the scoreboard than it does in real life.

"It is what it is," Miley said. "I'm kind of glad it hit me — like I said last night, it was another run they would have scored, maybe possibly two. It was just one of those outings where I didn't have good command. Made some pitches when I had to, had a little bit of bad luck. Obviously I had some opportunities to get out of that inning before that even happened, but move on to the next one and go from there."

If the Orioles rotation stays on turn, which is likely given they don't have any days off until the end of this 10-game road trip that continues into the Bay Area, Miley will make his second start for the club Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics — another American League West team, but one he didn't face with the Seattle Mariners.

Left-hander Ariel Miranda, who was dealt to Seattle for Miley and had made one major league appearance for the Orioles, also debuted with his new team Thursday. He allowed two runs on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts in six innings for the Mariners.
