After walk-off loss, Orioles see familiar face in A's Hammel

OAKLAND, CALIF. — As they try to rebound from a 5-4 walk-off loss to the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum, the Orioles will face right-hander Jason Hammel – Baltimore's Opening Day starter in 2013 – for the first time this season.

Hammel signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs in the offseason and was dealt to Oakland along with Jeff Samardzija earlier this month.

The Orioles player who has had the most success against Hammel? Catcher Nick Hundley, who is 7-for-14 with one homer and two RBIs. Most of those at-bats came in the National League when Hundley was with the San Diego Padres and Hammel was going through some up-and-down years with the Colorado Rockies.

Hammel's pitching much better these days. He ranked 11th in the majors in opponents batting average (.227), 13th in opponents' on-base percentage (.275) and 18th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.12).

He is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five career appearances in Oakland. Nick Markakis is 6-for-14 with one homer and five RBIs against Hammel in his career.

Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen owns a 3-0 record and 1.00 ERA in four career starts against Oakland. He tossed a career-high eight innings in his only previous start at O.co Coliseum on April 26, 2013.
