Right-hander Kevin Gausman was scratched from his scheduled start for Triple-A Norfolk tonight. With inclement weather expected Friday in Detroit, he could join the Orioles and be available to pitch in a possible doubleheader against the Tigers on Saturday.
Gausman, one of the final cuts in spring training, was set to start the Tides' season opener in Norfolk, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter called Norfolk manager Ron Johnson this afternoon to tell him the club might need Gausman this weekend.
Major League Baseball allows for an extra 26th player to be added to the roster in case of a doubleheader, but that player must be added and removed over a 24-hour span.
Gausman recorded his best major league start against the Tigers last season, holding Detroit to one run and five hits over six innings on June 2 at Camden Yards. The only run against Gausman, who struck out four in the game, came on a solo homer by Prince Fielder.
Knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa will start for Norfolk in place of Gausman tonight.
Tomorrow is the first of five scheduled day games for the Orioles. The Tigers play day games in early April because of weather in Detroit, and the New York Yankees play their home opener Monday afternoon and play another day game Tuesday.
Towson preschool teacher Erika Brannock, who lost her left leg from the knee down and needed multiple surgeries on her right leg after being injured in the Boston Marathon bombings last April, will throw out the first pitch before tonight's game.
