SARASOTA, FLA. — Catcher Matt Wieters increased his throwing distance to 120 feet Monday, the next step in his recovery from Tommy John surgery last June, according to Orioles manager Buck Showalter.
"In the whole progression of step things, it's not a big day. But this is a step day," Showalter said.
Wieters began a throwing program shortly after Thanksgiving and has been gradually increasing his distance while he rehabs in his hometown of Atlanta. He was initially scheduled to attend this week's minicamp, but received the OK from the organization to remain at home and continue his rehab there.
Wieters played in just 26 games last season before he was shut down with discomfort in his throwing elbow. The Orioles hope that he will be ready for Opening Day, but the club has been seeking insurance at catcher this offseason as a contingency plan.
Because of the uncertainty with Wieters, Showalter said he's considering bringing seven catchers to spring training.
The Orioles signed veteran J.P. Arencibia to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training last week and hope to retain catcher Ryan Lavarnway. The Orioles should find out by Wednesday if Lavarnway cleared waivers.
