Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, back right, is seen past home plate umpire Laz Diaz, left, and Baltimore Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph as he watches from the dugout in the ninth inning of a baseball game in Baltimore, Monday, May 30, 2016.

Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph took a foul ball off his groin area in the eighth inning of Monday's 7-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox. He finished the game, but manager Buck Showalter said he was going to an area hospital to be further examined.

"He's getting checked," Showalter said. "Some residual from the lick he took."

Joseph needed several moments, under the attention of Showalter and head athletic trainer Richie Bancells, to gather himself and remain in the game. Joseph was left on deck when third baseman Ryan Flaherty grounded out to end the game in the 9th.

Before that, Joseph ended an 0-for-19 streak with a single in the fifth inning. He came up with the bases loaded in the second inning, but grounded out to the pitcher to keep him without a run batted in this season. Joseph is now batting .182/.239/.212.

Prior to the game, Showalter said Joseph was contributing more than enough on defense to warrant his place, and would soon turn it around at the plate.
