Orioles acquire left-hander Daniel Rodriguez in minor league deal

The Orioles made a minor league trade on Friday night, acquiring left-hander Daniel Rodriguez from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash, the club announced.

Rodriguez will report to minor league spring training at Twin Lakes Park.

The 30-year-old has never pitched in the majors. He was 5-16 with a 5.04 ERA with the Braves' Triple-A team in Lawrenceville, Ga., in 29 games (21 starts) over 125 innings.

But the Orioles have been interested in Rodriguez for a few years, trying to sign him out of the Mexican League before the 2013 season after Rodriguez posted an 11-5 record and 2.54 ERA with Saltillo.

The club's interest was renewed this winter when Rodriguez pitched well – mostly in relief – for the Culiacan Tomato Growers of the Mexican League.

Rodriguez is 3-3 with a 3.68 ERA this winter with Culiacan, which is playing in the Mexican League championship. He is 2-2 with a 3.58 ERA, 19 strikeouts and four walks in 15 1/3 relief innings.

The Orioles will likely take a look at Rodriguez as a reliever this spring.
