Report: Sonny Gray won't start tonight against Orioles

The Orioles won't have to face A's ace Sonny Gray tonight, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Susser wrote that A's manager Bob Melvin was clear Thursday that Gray, who suffered back spasms Wednesday and was scratched from his start Thursday against the Blue Jays, will not start tonight.

Jesse Chavez took Gray's spot against Toronto and the A's were beaten 4-2. The Blue Jays have won 11 straight games.

Chavez was scheduled against the Orioles tonight. Melvin said Chris Bassitt, scheduled to start Saturday, won't be moved up, according to Slusser.

The A's are expected to bring up someone from Triple-A Nashville and the best candidates, according to Slusser, are:

**Brad Mills, a left-hander who is scheduled to start for Triple-A Nashville tonight. He is 3-0 with a 1.56 ERA against the Orioles.

**Barry Zito, the former A's and Giants left-hander, who is scheduled to pitch Saturday for Nashville. He is 8-7 with a 3.48 ERA in Triple-A.

**Cody Martin, was on call Thursday in case the A's needed a starter. He ended up not being used.
