FORT MYERS, Fla. — Making his second Grapefruit League appearance of the spring Saturday night, Kevin Gausman wore a pair of new prescription glasses in a game for the first time — and had a formidable Red Sox lineup seeing double.
Gausman retired the first seven hitters he faced on his way to three shutout innings in the Orioles' 13-2 win over the Red Sox at JetBlue Park.
Gausman, 23, struck out three of the first four batters he faced, as Daniel Nava, David Ortiz and Mike Napoli all went down on split-fingered fastballs.
"Yeah, other than a couple guys, this is pretty much what they're going to have," Gausman said of the Red Sox. "So it's always good when you have that first kind of success against their legit lineup.
"More than anything, I wanted to establish my fastball. I threw some really good fastballs inside on guys, both lefties and righties. That was really more my focus. I think a lot of the guys, that's their focus right now. It's fastball command, and then go from there."
As for the new look, Gausman was comfortable with it and his results.
"The glasses are great, a little weird," he said. "I think I need to treat them with some anti-glare stuff, just for night games. This is the first time I've thrown with them, and it was a night game, so it was kind of like, 'OK, let's see how these things work.' I'm pretty happy about them.
"I feel like when I put them on, I have a little alter ego I can kind of go into, get my game face on."

In five Grapefruit League innings, Gausman has allowed just one run on three hits, with five strikeouts and one walk.
Nonroster reliever Evan Meek retired all six hitters he faced, recording three strikeouts. Meek has allowed one hit over four scoreless innings this spring.
The Orioles went up 2-0 in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk to Ryan Flaherty and a single to left field by Steve Pearce. Nolan Reimold beat out an infield single to plate the first run, and Henry Urrutia slapped an opposite-field double off the high left-field wall to score Pearce from second.
In the sixth inning, Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar crushed a two-run double off the center-field wall to score Urrutia and Johnny Monell. Steve Clevenger laced a two-run single to right to extend the lead to 6-0 in the seventh.
The Orioles then scored a spring-high eight runs in a seventh inning that saw the Red Sox implode with two fielding errors, two walks, a hit batter and a double steal.
