OAKLAND, CALIF. — Maryland junior wide receiver Stefon Diggs will not make a decision on whether to declare for the NFL draft until after the Terps play Stanford in the Foster Farms Bowl on Tuesday, Maryland coach Randy Edsall said Saturday.
Edsall said he met with Diggs and the receiver's mother for more than an hour before Maryland left for San Francisco Thursday and shared information and feedback he received about Diggs from the NFL draft advisory committee and various NFL personnel people.
Edsall declined to share that feedback with reporters.
"I gave them all the information that I had," Edsall said. "I asked them if they had any questions, and they did. And they asked me for my opinion, and I gave them my opinion of what I think he should do. And I asked him if he's leaning any way at all, and he said that he wasn't, that he wants to play the game, and he'll worry about it after the game is over. So we'll see."
While Diggs has not played since suffering a lacerated kidney against Penn State on Nov. 1, the 6-foot, 190-pound junior is tied for second in the Big Ten in catches per game (5.8) and is fourth in receiving yards per game (72.7).
CBSSports.com ranks Diggs as the 20th-best draft-eligible wide receiver prospect and projects Diggs would be a fourth-round pick if he foregoes his final season at Maryland and declares for the draft.
The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 15.
"All I want him to do is just go out and play and have fun," Edsall said of Diggs, who was cleared for contact Dec. 1 and will play against Stanford. "And then, as I told him, you've got to sit down and you've got to list the pros and cons, the pros and cons of staying and the pros and cons of leaving and weigh it all out and go from there. And I told him that whatever decision he makes I'll support him 100 percent. So that's a decision he will have to make, and he'll make it after the bowl."
