Third baseman Manny Machado still out of Orioles' lineup vs. Mariners

SEATTLE Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game with lower-back spasms, but said he’s still optimistic he will be able to return at some point during their series against the Seattle Mariners.

Machado has done all pregame work taking batting practice and fielding grounders and said the injury has reached a point where it's manageable.

Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez threw a two-inning, simulated game before tonight's game against the Mariners, tossing 40 pitches, and said his right ankle feels strong enough to go on a minor league rehabilitation assignment.

Jimenez faced outfielder David Lough and coach Einar Diaz in the game and simulated getting up and down in between innings.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman will start tonight's game against a Seattle lineup that included seven left-handed hitters and switch-hitter Kendrys Morales in his return to the Mariners.

Left-handed hitters are batting .260 against Gausman; right-handed hitters are .292.
