SEATTLE — Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game with lower-back spasms, but said he’s still optimistic he will be able to return at some point during their series against the Seattle Mariners.
Machado has done all pregame work — taking batting practice and fielding grounders — and said the injury has reached a point where it's manageable.
Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez threw a two-inning, simulated game before tonight's game against the Mariners, tossing 40 pitches, and said his right ankle feels strong enough to go on a minor league rehabilitation assignment.
Jimenez faced outfielder David Lough and coach Einar Diaz in the game and simulated getting up and down in between innings.
Right-hander Kevin Gausman will start tonight's game against a Seattle lineup that included seven left-handed hitters and switch-hitter Kendrys Morales in his return to the Mariners.
Left-handed hitters are batting .260 against Gausman; right-handed hitters are .292.
