Instant analysis of Orioles' 2-1 loss to Royals in Game 3 of ALCS

Baltimore Sun reporters, columnists and editors share their immediate reaction to Game 3 of the American League Championship Series between the Orioles and the Kansas City Royals.

Dan Connolly, reporter: We've talked all year about how the Orioles need to hit the home run to score. And they were facing a pitcher, Jeremy Guthrie, who can give up the long ball. But the Orioles couldn't go deep. And they couldn't score. And now they face a sweep by the Royals.

Peter Schmuck, columnist: It's never over until it's over, but it sure looks like the ALCS is going to be over soon. The Royals did in Game 3 what they did in the first two games. The only difference was that the fans were cheering for them instead of against them. The odds against the Orioles are stacked higher than an Arthur Bryant's pulled pork sandwich.

Dean Jones Jr., editor: The Royals keep pushing all the right buttons. And the Orioles aren't catching any of the breaks. The better team won again Tuesday. And now Kansas City needs just one win in the next four days to advance to its first World Series since 1985. You know Buck Showalter and the Orioles aren't quitting, but it's going to be tough.

Ron Fritz, sports editor: Everything is going Kansas City's way, and the Royals again proved it in Game 3. The Orioles were able to get Jeremy Guthrie out of the game after five innings. Maybe they should have re-thought that strategy because of the Royals' filthy bullpen. Thought the Orioles were good in tight games? The Royals are way better.
