Group of Orioles players and staff to leave Friday for Virginia

Lots of varied things coming out of manager Buck Showalter's evening session with the media:

Roughly 30 players and staff will leave Friday's 1:05 p.m. game at about 3 p.m. – after about four or five innings -- to board a charter plane for Virginia to attend a memorial for late public relations director Monica Barlow, who passed away on Feb. 28 after a protracted battle with lung cancer.

Showalter said the club originally was going to use a smaller plane, but he didn't want to turn anyone away, so owner Peter Angelos has chartered a larger one. The group will fly back by approximately 10:30 p.m. Friday, Showalter said.

"Everyone wants to go, we had that problem," Showalter said. "And Mr. Angelos expanded the plane. ... It's a hell of a gesture. I think we can cover everybody who knew her and wants to go. It's going to be a pretty good contingent. I'm real proud of our guys."

Players who are expected to attend include veterans Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, J.J. Hardy, Chris Davis, Matt Wieters, Tommy Hunter and Darren O'Day.

Bench coach John Russell will stay behind to manage the rest of Friday's game.

** Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, who is recovering from left knee surgery, took bare-handed grounders from side-to-side on Wednesday, the first time he has done that. Infield coach Bobby Dickerson threw the soft grounders to Machado as with outfield coach Wayne Kirby looked on. Machado also had a mole removed from his back Wednesday afternoon but that won't inhibit his rehab, Showalter said.

** Right-hander Dylan Bundy, who is recovering from elbow surgery, threw from 180 feet again Wednesday while participating in his usual throwing program. He hopes to throw off a flat mound on March 19.

** Outfielder David Lough was scratched from Wednesday's game after taking an errant liner off his right foot during outfield drills Wednesday morning. X-rays were negative, but Showalter said he decided to keep Lough back one day. He should be fine going forward.

** Outfielder Henry Urrutia, who has been dealing with right shoulder inflammation, is a full go for Thursday's game.

** Right-hander Kevin Gausman will get the start Saturday night in Fort Myers vs. Boston, while Bud Norris will pitch the afternoon game against the Red Sox in Sarasota, Fla.

** First baseman Chris Marrero took 10 swings today and his strained oblique didn't feel any better. He has yet to play in a game.

** The Orioles have postponed Saturday's tag day due to snow and ice at Camden Yards. Potential season ticketholders can now pick out their seats on March 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
